This procedure involves the insertion of cement into a fractured vertebral body of spinal bone. As people age, especially women, they tend to get osteoporosis which can lead to spinal fractures. These fracures can be quite painful. Usually these fractures will heal on their own but this can take a couple of months. The vertebroplasty of kyphoplasty type procedures actually solidify the bone immediately and the pain is resolved quickly in most people. The procedure takes around 30 minutes per spinal fracture and more than one level can be done if necessary. the picture below shows the cement in the fractured bone. The cement has a dye and thus shows up darker on the image.
